  13. Whenever you use a dialog box and you want instructions
  14. on how to proceed, press ^rF1^r for help. When a menu is pulled
  15. down, you can highlight any item and press ^rF1^r for
  16. help on that specific item.

  18.  ^r F1=Help ^r at the right side of the menu bar.
  19.  For help on a menu, click the menu bar then
  20.  click ^r F1=Help ^r.
  21. When you first familiarize yourself with a Utility, you might
  22. find it helpful to select the ^b[Topics]^b button at the bottom of
  23. any help page. It displays a list of topics
  24. which provides background and introductory material.

  84. Keep an eye on the bottom line of each screen. This line
  85. provides a short description of each menu item or the summary
  86. instructions for a dialog box.
  87. Also, the bottom line often displays a set of shortcuts for
  88. the most often-needed menu functions.
  89. DEFRAG provides a set of high-powered, command-line switches
  90. to get things done from a batch file or to simplify
  91. life at the DOS command prompt. For help with command-line
  92. switches and options, type ^bDEFRAG /F^b.
  93. In this online help, we use the following conventions:
  94.   ^rkey^r
  95.  A single key such as ^r^C18^r or ^rHome^r or ^rspacebar^r.
  96.  Press and then release it.
  97.   ^rshift^r+^rkey^r
  98.  A "keychord."  Press ^rshift^r and while still
  99.  holding it down, press ^rkey^r.  Release both.
  100.   ^rAlt^r+^rkey1^r ^rkey2^r Press ^rAlt^r and while still holding it down,
  101.  press ^rkey1^r.  Then you press ^rkey2^r (with or
  102.  without releasing ^rAlt^r first).  Alt+ keys are
  103.  used to accelerate menu selections.
  104.   ^rClick^r
  105.      Press and release either mouse button.
  106.   ^rClick Right^r
  107.  ^rClick^r a specific mouse button. Rarely used;
  108.  normally both buttons work the same.
  109.   ^rDrag^r
  110.  Press a button and while keeping it pressed,

  161. Use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r, ^rHome^r and ^rEnd^r to move the selection bar in the
  162. drive list. All your DOS-recognized drives, including
  163. diskette drives and DOS partitions are listed. Network drives
  164. are not listed
  165. DEFRAG cannot optimize network drives.
  166. Press ^rEnter^r to select the highlighted drive for optimization,
  167. or press ^rEsc^r to back out of this dialog.
  168. Before DEFRAG begins optimizing, it analyzes the drive
  169. and makes a recommendation as to the best optimization method.
  170. At that time, you can choose to modify the various
  171. configuration settings before optimizing.
  172. This dialog lets you select one of two optimization methods.
  173. Use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r to move the cursor. Press the ^rSpacebar^r to
  174. select the desired method. Press ^rEnter^r when done, or ^rEsc^r to
  175. cancel.
  176.  ^uFull Optimization^u: Best performance gain; takes the longest
  177.  amount of time to run.
  178. Command line switch: ^bDEFRAG /F^b ("Full optimization")
  179. ^C07 Moves directories to the front of the disk
  180. ^C07 Unfragments all files
  181. ^C07 Moves all gaps to the end of the disk
  182.  ^uUnfragment Files Only^u: Very fast to run.
  183. Command line switch: ^bDEFRAG /U^b
  184. ^C07 Does not optimize directory placement
  185. ^C07 Leaves unfilled gaps around the disk
  186. This dialog lets you select a filename sorting order. When
  187. you optimize with the Full Optimization Method or with the
  188. File Sort option (see ^rAlt^r+^rO^r ^rM^r), all files in all directories
  189. are sorted to this criterion.
  190.  Note: File sorting DOES NOT affect the physical positioning
  191.  of the file's data on the disk.
  192. To select a ^bSort Criterion^b, press one of the hotkeys ^rU^r,^rN^r,^rE^r,^rD^r,
  193. or ^rS^r. Or use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r and press ^rSpacebar^r. Move down to the
  194. ^bSort Order^b box and select Ascending or Descending. Press
  195. ^rEnter^r to proceed with your choices or ^rEsc^r to cancel.
  196.  Note: You can select a sort order from the DOS command line:
  197.  DEFRAG ^b/SN^b by Name A-to-Z
  198.  DEFRAG ^b/SN-^b by Name, Z-to-A
  199.  DEFRAG ^b/SE^b by Extension A-to-Z
  200.  DEFRAG ^b/SE-^b by Extension, Z-to-A
  201.  DEFRAG ^b/SD^b oldest-to-newest
  202.  DEFRAG ^b/SD-^b newest-to-oldest
  203.  DEFRAG ^b/SS^b smallest-to-largest
  204.  DEFRAG ^b/SS-^b largest-to-smallest
  205. This screen identifies all of the characters which might
  206. appear on the disk map. Press ^rEnter^r when you are finished
  207. looking at it.
  208. Select the Quit! menu (or press ^rAlt^r+^rX^r) when you are finished
  209. using DEFRAG.
  210. After analyzing the currently selected drive, DEFRAG
  211. displays the recommended optimization method.  If no
  212. optimization is necessary, DEFRAG will indicate so.
  213. If an optimization is necessary, it will be one of the
  214. following:
  215.  ^uFull Optimization^u:  Best speed improvement; longest
  216.   amount of time to run:
  217.   ^C07Moves directories to the front
  218.   ^C07Unfragments all files
  219.   ^C07Moves all gaps to the end
  220.  ^uUnfragment Files^u:  Very fast to run; does not compress
  221.   empty space (leaves gaps).
  222. You can select a different method by pressing ^rEsc^r, then
  223. selecting ^uOptimization Method
  224. .^u from the ^uOptimize^u Menu
  225. (^rAlt^r+^rO^r ^rO^r).
  226. To immediately start optimizing with the suggested method,
  227. highlight the ^b[Optimize]^b button and press ^rEnter^r.
  228. The ^b[Configure]^b button (or press ^rEsc^r here) pulls down the
  229. ^uOptimize^u menu and lets you select such options as sorting your
  230. directories and files. If you want to use any of these
  231. options, highlight the ^b[Configure]^b button and press ^rEnter^r.
  232. Later, use ^rAlt^r+^rB^r to begin optimizing.
